Tony Cairoli clinched a ninth title and his seventh in the premier class of the FIM Motocross World Championship at Assen for the Grand Prix of the Netherlands.

The GP was won by Jeffrey Herlings: a fourth victory from the last five outings confirming his second position in the MXGP series.
Jorge Prado lifted an MX2 winner’s trophy for the third time this year while Pauls Jonass took a step closer to an eighth MX2 crown in nine years for the Austrian marque by scoring second position overall.

A week after sweltering conditions in Florida, MXGP returned to cooler temperatures in northern Europe and for the third year in a row the historic TT Assen Circuit entertained the FIM World Championship with a rough and shallow sandy layout temporarily constructed over the famous GT chicane at the Dutch venue. The eighteenth round of nineteen saw Tony Cairoli needing to finish in the top sixteen of the first moto if teammate Jeffrey Herlings won the race and the Sicilian duly racked-up his ninth crown and sixth for KTM by holeshotting and pushing #84 hard to the finish line.
The 31 year old is the second most successful rider in the FIM contest that was born in 1957 and gave KTM their first premier class crown with the 450 SX-F after five accolades with the 350 SX-F between 2010-2014. It also completed the set with the motorcycle having won AMA 450SX & 450MX titles in the USA in recent years. In the second moto Cairoli tried to rally from a top six start and again follow Herlings who broke free from the pack after two laps. He challenged Max Nagl for second spot but lost his tear-offs and crashed two circulations before the finish; eventually taking sixth for fourth overall.
Cairoli: “I know what it takes to make a solid and consistent championship; we made it and I’m really happy about this. It was an amazing season, one of my best. It is amazing I can still improve myself after almost fifteen years of the world championship. I’m proud of this. It is the first with the 450 KTM for me, which is very special. We had a good weekend.”
#222 might have celebrated another championship on Dutch soil (he also partied at Lierop in 2005 and 2009) but the Grand Prix was a showcase for the sand capabilities of Herlings. The Dutchman recovered from a mistake in the Qualification Heat on Saturday to grasp his fourth Pole Position from the last five outings. He roused the crowd in both races to record a third 1-1 of 2017. The 50 points also mean the ‘rookie’ banks second place for the year and KTM’s first 1-2 in the history of the premier class.
Herlings: “I want to say a big congratulations to my teammate Tony; it is his ninth championship and he was the best guy through the season. Today was really good. I came from sixth-seventh to second and caught Tony to win the first moto. I had some wheelspin in the second moto and was in tenth but worked my way to lead in a couple of laps: it was a good moto and I was able to win with a big gap. I’m really happy with my first Dutch GP win on the big bike. I really appreciated the support here today and not just for me but for all the riders. I also happy to get second in the championship and it’s good [considering] where we came from at the beginning of the season.”
MX2
Jorge Prado returned to the site of his Grand Prix debut a year ago and where he snared a sensational podium result. The Spaniard struggled on Saturday due to a malfunctioning front brake but showed his usual proficiency in the sand on Sunday. #61 kept teammate Pauls Jonass on his toes in the first moto and rode to second place behind the fast Latvian for another 1-2 with the 250 SX-Fs. In the second race Prado quickly danced away to the lead and defended the advantage from Jeremy Seewer on the last lap for his fourth moto spoils of the season and third overall win.
Prado: “It was good to get my second win on a sand track. I’ve learned a lot this year and have to put it all together now to do better next year. The most important thing is to be consistent, as you see with Pauls. He is pretty much the fastest guy this year and it’s possible to learn a lot from him and use him as a reference. We didn’t train so much together this year because I was going to school! Now I’m looking forward to next weekend which should be a totally different kind of track.”
Pauls Jonass emerged from a nervy Saturday at Assen to secure his fourteenth podium appearance and hold a 41 point lead over Seewer with only 50 left to win. The Latvian hit the sand twice on the first day and took to the line in 21st place for the two thirty minute and two lap motos on Sunday. He rocketed to a holeshot and then dealt with Prado to ace his fourteenth win of 2017 and the first since the Grand Prix of Belgium. A cautious approach in the opening phases of the next race left him searching for a mid-top ten slot and he captured seventh; good enough for the second step.
Jonass: “For sure I wanted to win the title this weekend and after the first race it seemed to be possible but I didn’t get a good start in the second race and struggled on the first few laps. I had some close calls with riders next to me and took it carefully, maybe I was too cautious. I put pressure on myself and that was my problem in the second moto. Saturday was very bad but I turned it around and got on the podium again. Now I have a 41 point lead but I will try not to look at that in the next moto; as you saw with Tony today he took the holeshot and was pushing until the last laps to pass Jeffrey. I want to have the same approach next weekend.”
The 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship will come to a conclusion next week at the hillside setting of Villars sous Ecot for the Grand Prix of Pays de Montbeliard.
