SA YJR Storm Home in State Champs | News

The SA YJR team of Alex Larwood and Wil Carpenter wrapped up the 2018 South Australian Motocross Championships with podium results at the final round.

The final round of the SAMX series was held at MRA Motocross track this past weekend, with cold, windy and wet conditions facing the competitors in an exciting finish to the 2018 championships.

Alex Larwood entered the final round with one thing on his mind, winning. Since he missed the opening round of the series due to injury, Alex’s goal has been to just wins races as his hopes of winning a championship were dashed.

Alex returned from round two onwards and has been on a winning spree ever since and the final round was no exception. On his YZ125 he went 2-1-1 on the weekend for the overall win and ended 5th in the championship while on his YZ250F he took 1-1-1 results for a dominant round victory and ended the series in fourth overall in the title.

“I’m happy to get the win on both bikes again but it’s a bummer I couldn’t win a title,” Alex expressed. I have now set my sights on the World Titles and Junior Nationals in Tassie and hope to finish the year out strongly at these two events,” he said.

Young Wil Carpenter came into the final round looking for a strong finish after a promising opening few rounds. He pushed hard on both his bikes where he scored 2-2-2 results on his YZ65 to take second for the round and wrap up second in the championship.

On his YZ85 he struggled a little with the heavy conditions and took 3-4-4 moto results for fourth on the day and fourth in the championship. Wil’s growth as a rider has been very good over the series as he has he got stronger each round and closer to the leaders, which was awesome.

“I’m stoked with how things went today,” Wil says with excitement. “the track was tough, and I learned a lot about racing in those conditions but my bikes were perfect and it’s awesome to be on the podium in the state championships.”

SA GYTR-YJR Team Manager, Shane Metcalfe, was very happy with the boys efforts on the weekend as they deserved the good results after the hard work they had put in over recent months.

“The boys rode great! Alex was in a class of his own and dominated his races. This is his first year on the bigger bikes and he has adjusted well and making progress.

“Wil rode great and he has managed to close the gap to the front guys which was great to see. His progression this season has been great as he is always watching and learning from his bigger team mate which is great to witness. Alex has also been great in helping Wil out with tips and encouragement throughout the series.

“Congratulations to all the kids that won titles,” said Metcalfe.
