The 2024 Fox Australian Supercross Championship kicked off in spectacular style at the Morton Bay Double Header at Kayo Stadium, Redcliffe, QLD, with a sold-out crowd witnessing intense racing across all four classes: SX1, SX2, SX3, and the CR22 Cup. Despite mid-week rain, the ProTraxx crew delivered a top-tier track, setting the stage for fierce competition in the double-header format for SX1 and SX2, where consistency would be key to podium success for Dean Wilson.
SX1: Wilson Perfect with 1-1 Finish
Empire Kawasaki’s Luke Clout launched into the lead in the opening SX1 main event, igniting a fierce battle with Honda Racing Team riders Aaron Tanti, Joey Savatgy, and reigning champion Dean Wilson. However, Wilson found another gear, powering through the whoops with unmatched speed. Once he secured the lead, Wilson was unstoppable, crossing the finish line five seconds clear of Savatgy in second.
In the second main event, Wilson dominated from the start with a commanding holeshot. Savatgy settled into second early, closely followed by Clout. The pair managed to pull away from the field, but Wilson never let up. Despite late pressure from Savatgy, Wilson held firm, securing another win to complete the night with a perfect 1-1 score and take the overall victory. Savatgy brought it home in second, while Luke Clout, the lone Australian on the podium, put his Empire Kawasaki in third.
SX2: Ferguson Triumphs Amid Chaos
SX2 delivered both Honda dominance and high drama. Boost Mobile Honda’s Noah Ferguson secured a thrilling win in the first race, ahead of Reid Taylor in second and Ryder Kingsford in third.
The second race saw early chaos, with Raceline Husqvarna’s Rhys Budd and McElrath tangling, resulting in a crash for Budd that reshuffled the order. Empire Kawasaki’s Reid Taylor capitalised, taking the early lead before an aggressive move from Connolly sparked a heated battle. As the leaders clashed, a dramatic all-Honda collision involving Connolly, McElrath, and Cole Thompson further shook up the field.
Ryder Kingsford seized the opportunity, working his way past Taylor to take the lead, but Ferguson wasn’t done yet. While the spotlight was on the leaders, Ferguson made a decisive pass into fifth position over KTM’s Kayden Minear in the final turn, securing the overall victory. Taylor claimed second by a mere point, with Kingsford rounding out the podium in third.
SX3: Burchell Holds Strong for the Win
In SX3, Bulk Nutrients WBR Yamaha rider Seth Burchell stormed to the front early, fending off teammate Kayd Kingsford and Honda’s Jake Cannon. Kingaford stayed close until a mid-race fall ended his challenge. Cannon applied late pressure, but Burchell remained composed, crossing the line first to take an impressive win. Cannon finished second, with Kingsford recovering to take third.
CR22 Cup: Nunn’s Last-Turn Heroics
The second edition of the CR22 85cc Cup delivered edge-of-your-seat action. Tate Reed, fastest in qualifying, was forced to withdraw after a crash in his heat race. In the main event, Jack Nunn grabbed the holeshot and was immediately pursued by KTM’s Cooper Ford.
Ford took the lead after a small mistake from Nunn, but Nunn wasn’t done. In a dramatic final-corner move, Nunn dived to the inside and reclaimed the lead to win the race. Ford crossed the line in second, with Seth Thomas completing the podium in third.
Riders will now regroup and shift their focus to the second round of the Fox Australian Supercross Championship, returning for the second instalment of the Redcliffe double-header.
