Kawasaki has expanded its KLE adventure range with an all-new 649cc parallel-twin dubbed the Kawasaki KLE650 and a higher-specification SE version, featuring 21-inch front wheels, long-travel suspension, electronic throttle control and a claimed 70PS engine. The KLE650 and KLE650 SE adventure motorcycles for 2027 introduce are essentially a larger capacity sibling to the KLE500 with a revised 649cc parallel-twin engine, new chassis development and a comprehensive electronics package.

The new KLE650 sits in the competitive 600–800cc adventure category, but Kawasaki has taken a slightly different approach to some of its more off-road-focused rivals. Rather than building an uncompromising dirt machine, the manufacturer has prioritised long-distance touring comfort, road handling and the ability to tackle unsealed roads.

Both models share a high-tensile steel trellis frame, 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels, long-travel suspension and rally-inspired bodywork. However, the SE adds several significant upgrades, including tubeless wheels, a quickshifter, TFT instrumentation and additional touring equipment.

NEW-GENERATION 649CC PARALLEL TWIN

At the heart of the KLE650 is a liquid-cooled, DOHC, eight-valve 649cc parallel-twin engine producing a claimed 51.6kW (70PS) in European specification.

Although based on Kawasaki’s established 649cc parallel-twin platform, the engine receives electronic throttle valves, revised intake and exhaust systems, updated fuel injection and ECU settings aimed at improving torque delivery and throttle response.

Kawasaki has concentrated on producing strong torque below 4000rpm while maintaining a broad power delivery through the midrange and into the upper rev range above 6000rpm. The engine uses 38mm throttle bores, fine-atomising fuel injectors producing 75-micron droplets and a redesigned airbox with dual intake ducts to reduce intake noise.

The compression ratio has been set at 10.6:1, compared with 10.8:1 on the 2026 Z650 S. Kawasaki says the lower ratio allows greater flexibility with ignition timing to improve torque characteristics.

Further changes include revised intake cam timing, 630mm exhaust header pipes and a compact engine layout incorporating a 180-degree crankshaft and balancer shaft. The transmission uses a cassette-style arrangement, while an assist and slipper clutch reduces lever effort and helps control rear-wheel hopping during aggressive downshifts.

Electronic throttle control also allows Kawasaki to fit cruise control as standard, while the SE receives an up-and-down quickshifter capable of operating from just 2000rpm. The quickshifter will also be available as an accessory for the standard model.

TRELLIS FRAME WITH ROAD-FOCUSED DEVELOPMENT

The KLE650 uses a compact steel trellis chassis developed from the KLE500 platform, but Kawasaki has revised its construction and geometry to place greater emphasis on stability and comfort at highway speeds.

The frame itself weighs 16.9kg, with the engine acting as a stressed member to increase rigidity without unnecessary reinforcement. A hollow, reinforced swingarm mounting plate bolts directly to the engine, while the redesigned steel swingarm is 500g lighter than the KLE500’s equivalent component.

Wheelbase remains 1555mm, with a 28-degree steering-head angle and 106mm of trail, compared with 104mm on the KLE500.

A slim 16-litre fuel tank has been designed to allow riders to move forward when standing, while the handlebars, footpegs and bodywork incorporate lessons from Kawasaki’s KX motocross range.

The standard seat height is 870mm, with an optional lower seat reducing that figure by 30mm to 840mm. An alternative pillion seat can also create a flatter, more dirt-bike-style seating arrangement for improved rider movement.

210MM FRONT AND 196MM REAR TRAVEL

Suspension comes from KYB, with a 43mm inverted cartridge fork offering 210mm of front-wheel travel. At the rear, Kawasaki’s New Uni-Trak linkage system provides 196mm of travel, with stepless spring preload adjustment.

The suspension settings are deliberately more road-oriented than those of the KLE500. Front spring stiffness increases from 9N/mm to 10N/mm, while the rear spring rate drops from 90N/mm to 75N/mm.

Kawasaki says the revised settings improve tyre contact and ride comfort on sealed surfaces while retaining sufficient travel to absorb bumps on unsealed roads.

Braking performance comes from twin 300mm front discs with dual-piston calipers and a 230mm rear disc, also operated by a dual-piston caliper. Selectable ABS allows the system to be disabled using a handlebar switch, although it automatically reactivates at both wheels when the ignition is cycled.

Both models use 21-inch front and 17-inch rear spoked wheels fitted with Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour tyres. The standard KLE650 uses conventional inner tubes, while the SE receives tubeless-compatible spoked wheels, making puncture repairs more convenient when touring.

TRACTION CONTROL, CRUISE CONTROL AND TFT DISPLAY

Kawasaki has equipped both models with Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC), offering two intervention settings. Mode 1 prioritises performance and allows greater rear-wheel drive, while Mode 2 intervenes more aggressively when wheelspin is detected on slippery surfaces.

Electronic cruise control is also standard, with the system automatically adjusting engine output through the electronic throttle valves to maintain the selected speed. Riders can adjust the speed using handlebar controls, while braking, operating the clutch or shifting gears disengages the system.

The standard KLE650 receives an LCD instrument display, while the SE features a five-inch full-colour TFT screen with two selectable layouts. One uses a conventional road-oriented display, while the other adopts a rally-inspired arrangement with larger speed and gear-position information.

Both models support smartphone connectivity through Kawasaki’s RIDEOLOGY THE APP MOTORCYCLE, allowing riders to access vehicle information, maintenance details, riding logs and phone notifications. The SE also supports turn-by-turn navigation through the TFT display, subject to market availability and licensing requirements.

SE ADDS TUBELESS WHEELS AND MORE PROTECTION

The KLE650 SE receives several additional features aimed at improving long-distance touring and adventure capability.

Along with its quickshifter and TFT instrumentation, the SE gains a larger windscreen, sitting 106mm taller than the standard model’s screen. The windscreen can be adjusted through three positions, with increases of 27mm and 55mm above its lowest setting.

Other SE upgrades include a D.I.D aluminium handlebar, metal-reinforced handguards, a USB-C charging outlet and a larger aluminium skid plate extending farther around the underside and sides of the engine.

The standard model receives a lighter plastic skid plate, while both bikes feature removable rubber footpeg inserts that expose serrated metal pegs for additional grip when standing.

The rear subframe is designed to accommodate two panniers and a top case simultaneously, with genuine Kawasaki luggage available as accessories. The exhaust has also been positioned to allow symmetrical pannier mounting.

Styling draws heavily on Kawasaki’s rally heritage, with a tall front cowling, compact triple-LED headlight arrangement and bodywork shaped to give riders room to move when standing.

The standard KLE650 will be offered in Metallic Matte Graphenesteel Gray, while the SE receives Pearl Storm Gray, subject to market availability.

Kawasaki has yet to release its complete final specification sheet, including kerb weight and fuel consumption figures. Australian pricing and availability have also not been confirmed.

With a 70PS parallel twin, cruise control, long-travel suspension and a 21-inch front wheel, the KLE650 represents Kawasaki’s latest attempt to bridge the gap between everyday road use and adventure touring. Whether its more road-focused suspension and tyre package can satisfy riders looking for genuine off-road capability will be one of the biggest questions when we get to test it.
