A few more long rides in the Alpinestars Tech 7s have given me time to suss out the finer points, and while they don’t hug the foot quite like my Tech 10s, they’ve proven themselves to be an impressive bit of kit, especially when you remember they’re almost half the price of the Tech 10s. They look sharp, feel solid on the bike and offer more protection than most boots in this price bracket.
We Liked
Comfort – Comfort is where the Tech 7s shine. After a ride or two they become noticeably more supple. Inside, the soft foam ankle and heel padding adds a plush feel.
Protection – The outer shell material, a full thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) shin plate and calf protector are moulded in – this not only keeps the weight down but it also does a good job at protecting my shins and calves. There’s solid structure throughout thanks to the integrated steel shank running through the sole – perfect for added support when landing jumps or slogging through rocky terrain.
Movement – The boots feature a bio-mechanical pivot system at the ankle that give me a wide range of natural movement without sacrificing support, so shifting, braking and even walking around the pits all feel smooth.
Space – The boot opening is roomy, making it easy to get your foot in, even when you’re wearing knee braces.
We didn’t like
Heel lift – While overall comfort is high, the Tech 7s don’t wrap the heel and midfoot quite as snugly as the Tech 10s, and I found some heel float during more aggressive riding. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it does take away that locked-in feeling you get from a more premium boot.
Water resistance – This is another factor – my feet were noticeably wetter after creek crossings compared to when I wear my Tech 10s. The standard Tech 7 isn’t waterproof, so if you’re regularly riding wet terrain, you’ll want to look at the Drystar variant, which adds a waterproof membrane to keep your feet dry.
Verdict
Even with a few shortcomings, it’s hard to ignore what Alpinestars is offering here. For a boot that retails well under the Tech 10, you’re still getting CE certification, serious TPU impact protection, a steel-reinforced sole, and a flexible and breathable structure that works. It’s got the looks, the feel and the pedigree. No, it’s not as bombproof or watertight as the Tech 10, but it also doesn’t ask for nearly as much from your wallet. For most riders, the Tech 7 will be more than enough boot. Mitch Lees
