We’ve seen a lot of action cams come and go, but the Insta360 X4 isn’t one of them. With 8K 360° video and 5.7K slow motion it’s very impressive.
Let’s start with the picture quality… because wow! It’s unreal. The footage is crisp, especially when you take advantage of the ‘shoot first, point later’ feature. You don’t need to worry about aiming – just ride and sort out the angles after. The 360° view is flawlessly stitched together, giving you the ability to relive the entire ride from any perspective. It’s got an Invisible Selfie Stick effect but we haven’t been game enough to do that while riding.
We haven’t played with the AI editing yet as we’re still figuring out the basics of the camera but it allows you to reframe, stabilise and overlay GPS data. The FlowState Stabilization and 360° Horizon Lock keep things buttery smooth even when the terrain is anything but, and the new 2.5-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen makes flicking through settings on the go a breeze.
Now, not everything’s perfect. For starters, the files are massive. That 8K quality means you’re chewing through storage. Also, the camera sticks out quite a bit, and because there’s so much mass high up, I had a few moments where the mount vibrated loose. It’s a solid, well-built unit, no question, but you’ll want to double-check your mounting points if you’re riding rough. The bulbous lenses are still under testing for long-term durability, but the included removable lens guards offer some peace of mind.
The only real shame? Instagram and Facebook still don’t support full 360° playback, so you’re stuck converting or cropping your footage to share it.
