The Oakley Airbrake MTB goggle has been around for over a decade now and the fact that it remains a top-seller, despite the healthy price tag, tells you that this goggle still stands up at the top-tier of the goggle market because it ticks all the boxes for safety, comfort and functionality. I have ridden with and flogged this Oakley Airbrake MTB goggle for a while now so I consider myself a worthy reviewer.

WE LIKED

The fit. I love how this goggle fits. Not everyone has the same shaped face or wears the same brand or same-sized helmet so fit is a very personal thing. Airbrake goggles feature an outrigger system where the trap is not connected directly to the frame. This means the strap doesn’t pull at the frame and distort the fit as the outriggers take the tension from the strap. This keeps the face foam against your skin so no dirt or dust can get in.

The triple-layer face foam is thick and absorbent to keep the sweat out of your eyes and the outer layer is super soft, making it feel great against your face.

The MTB version of the Airbrake utilises a plastic mesh rather than foam in the area between the main goggle frame and the face foam. This is for maximum air-flow which helps keep you cool and, more importantly, resists fogging. This goggle is not ideal in really dusty conditions because of this but for singletrack riding on cold days, it is awesome.

The Prizm lens is the best. The lens is injection-moulded Plutonite and the lens is pre-curved making it so easy to fit. The Oakley lever system makes fitting and removing the lens for cleaning so easy. The quality of vision is excellent and the lens is hard which makes it tough enough to withstand severe roost. I have replaced the lens only once so it has been great value.

The strap is only starting to show signs of flogging out now as it is beginning to lose elasticity. It has held up extremely well for the amount of time I have worn this google so I cannot complain. It has done its job and then some.

WE DIDN’T LIKE

I can’t fault this goggle. For the right application this goggle is top-notch. If you ride in dust, opt for the standard Airbrake goggle because the MTB’s focus on venting lets dust inside.

 VERDICT

Despite the price tag, this goggle is great value because it lasts. The fit is excellent and the level of comfort is brilliant. Above all else, the quality of vision is amazing.
