READER RIDE | 2020 KTM SX-E5 | Reader's Ride

An electric bike was the right choice for Harvey Morrison. Here's what he's done to his KTM SX-E5 and how it's performing.

WHAT IS IT? 2020 KTM SX-E5

WHO? Harvey Morrison, age 8

WHERE DID YOU BUY IT? Torquay from Facebook Marketplace

HOW MUCH? $6500

WHY DID YOU BUY IT?

We brought the bike because Harvey was in the in between stages of getting to big for his Honda CRF50 but not quite big enough or confident enough to take on a KTM 50 two-stroke. We knew we wanted something with better brakes and suspension than the Honda CRF50 as he was starting to get a lot more confidence over the jumps and getting his corner speed up. That’s where we came across the KTM SX-E5 and after many hours of watching YouTube videos I was convinced that it would be the perfect stepping stone for Harvey

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO IT?

We haven’t had to do much to the E5, we got a custom set of graphics made up from Tom Carrol at Kickstart Industries with Harvey’s race number included. Other than that it has just been general maintenance like grips, brake pads, chain and sprockets. The real winner is zero oil changes, spark plugs or clutches.

HOW DOES IT GO?

The bike goes absolutely amazing with its six ride modes catering from absolute beginners to Pro 50cc riders with the simple push of a button. It was by far the best decision I have made to help build his confidence. Harvey started off in mode 3 and he is now in mode 6 and the bike absolutely rips

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BUYING ONE?

I would absolutely recommend the KTM E5 and had I known what I do now I would have bought one a lot sooner and not purchased the CRF50. The E5 has full height adjustment without doing any suspension mods and I could have easily got four or five years out of it had I got one sooner. We charge the bike between motos at the track with a small generator and have never had the bike come close to going flat on race days.
