Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club Secures 30-Year Conondale Lease | News

The Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club has secured a new 30-year lease with the Sunshine Coast Council to keep developing motorcycle sport at Conondale for future generations to come.

Over the last 20 years, the venue has hosted some of the biggest and most important events in the country across both motocross and enduro, including the A4DE, the MX Nats, Thumper Nats, Classic Dirt/Classic Weekend, the AORC, and numerous Queensland state enduro and motocross rounds.

The present 20-year lease expired in February 2020, and the new lease has been under negotiation for the past 5 years by Club members and Council.

It included the development of a master plan for the reserve – which now forms part of the lease – as well as placement of ongoing environmental safeguards for the improvement of the facility. Now the club is able to plan and to continue making improvements that will keep the Club and the venue operating for its membership, well into the future.

The Club would like to thank the Council for its assistance in securing the lease for our present and future members.

History of Green Park
Conondale Memorial Sports and Recreation Reserve is the formal name given to Green Park. The reserve came into existence in 1927 as a recreation and grazing reserve. Over the years, the venue has been used for various sporting organisations such as cricket, tennis and picnic racing. The reserve was the home of the Elaman Creek Cricket Club and they operated out of here up until the late 1960s. The cricket pitch is still present on the grounds. As a Motorsport facility, Green Park is classed as one of the top 3 Motocross tracks in Australia and is recognised on the world stage as a top venue.

History of Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club
The Club was formed in 1972 with a small track at Wises Road, Maroochydore. The next venue was on a dairy farm at Image Flat Road, Nambour where in 1973 the club started running Motocross events for a number of years. In 1976 Sunshine Coast Motorcycle Club was approached to use the reserve at Conondale as a motorcycling sports venue. In 1977, the first motocross event was run at Green Park, which was a round of the Hang 10 motocross series and 43 years later the club is still running events at Green Park.

Green Park has been host to a number of high profile events over the years which have included events such as Thumper Nats, Gaythorne 500, the International 4-day Enduro, an International Grass Track, State and Australian Titles for Motocross, Enduro and Trials. Spectators and competitors have come from all over Australia as well as internationally to attend and compete. The club has had and will continue to have Club and interclub events for all facets of the sport.

The Club has a membership that ranges between 300 and 700 depending on what events are being held. The age of members of the Club ranges from 4 years to over 80 years young. Children can ride in the demo class from the age of 4 and competition for juniors starts at 7 years old. A number of our Club members have successfully competed on the world stage in a range of disciplines.
