KTM star claims first MXGP victory of 2026

Lucas Coenen was untouchable on the sandy, rough debut layout at Almonte as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing began the first of nine European-based MXGP rounds on the 2026 calendar by winning the Grand Prix of Andalucía in commanding fashion.

Coenen delivered a flawless weekend in Spain to secure his first MXGP victory and first podium of the season, a result that also lifted the Belgian to the top of the premier-class standings. He set the tone on Saturday by controlling the MXGP Qualification Heat from the opening lap to the chequered flag, and carried that authority into Sunday’s racing. Coenen won the opening moto from the front and then took charge again in moto two, moving into the lead by the end of the second lap before pulling clear to win by more than 14 seconds.

Red Bull KTM also celebrated a strong day in MX2, where Simon Laengenfelder and Sacha Coenen ensured two orange bikes on the rostrum after combining for three top-three moto finishes across the two races. Laengenfelder, the reigning world champion, posted a consistent 3-3 score on Sunday. He came close to the holeshot in the second moto and managed his pace to secure 20 points, with the steady results earning him second overall and his second trophy in succession.

Sacha Coenen added further momentum after winning Saturday’s MX2 Qualification Heat for the second consecutive round, a result that — like his brother’s MXGP success — delivered 10 world championship points and first gate pick for Sunday. He led the opening MX2 moto for three laps before a crash dropped him to sixth at the finish, but he rebounded with a runner-up finish in moto two to take third overall and claim his first podium of the 2026 season. KTM also left Spain leading the MX2 Constructors standings.

Lucas Coenen, 1st and 1st for 1st overall in MXGP
“My first red plate! I am so pumped at the moment but we all know the season is still so long. The team worked really hard for me after the GP in Argentina and we bounced back pretty good. Fast starts and I passed people quickly here. I then managed the storm. Three wins this weekend: I can’t do better. We’ll try to keep it like that and look to the next round.”
