This month the Surron Hyper Bee has spent a little more time parked in the shed than usual, but only because Jax has been helping us test a bigger petrol-powered bike for ADB. Even so, every time we head to the farm he ends up jumping straight back on the Surron for one simple reason – it’s just so easy to ride.

Our little motocross track has become his favourite place to ride it. The Hyper Bee is so light, narrow and agile that it’s the only bike he can comfortably clear jumps on without having to charge into everything flat out. On the bigger petrol bike he’s still learning to carry enough speed, but on the Surron he can concentrate on body position and technique rather than worrying about whether he’s going fast enough to make the jump. It’s become a great confidence builder, and I often find him swapping back onto it after riding the petrol bike just so he can enjoy throwing it around.

Then something unexpected happened… Bonnie stole another bike. After claiming the GoBike as her own, she decided she wanted a turn on Jax’s Hyper Bee as well. We started her off in the middle power mode so she could get used to the throttle, then once we moved out into the open paddocks and farm roads we flicked it into full power. To my surprise, she handled it really well.

At just four years old she’s still a little too short to comfortably get both feet on the ground, so whenever she stopped she had to lean the bike onto one foot. If she had to paddle it around a tight turn she’d get a bit nervous, but once she was moving and had some open space in front of her, she was away. Before long I was simply following along instead of helping.

It’s pretty amazing how confidence comes with seat time. A month ago she was pinching the GoBike. Now she’s pinching the Hyper Bee as well. At this rate, I think we’re going to need another electric bike because Jax is spending almost as much time waiting for his sister to hand his bikes back as he is riding them.
