If you’ve ever sat on your bike at the end of a long day, dripping sweat, dust caked to your neck brace and a dumb grin plastered across your face, you know the feeling Costa Rica Unlimited is chasing. Now imagine that moment – but swap out the gum trees for palm trees, swap the dry creek bed for a crystal-clear jungle stream, and replace the red dust with a strip of black sand beach that stretches to the horizon. That’s Costa Rica Unlimited.

ADB Ed Mitch Lees recently travelled to Costa Rica to check out Costa Rica Unlimited (CRU) and was blown away at how epic the riding there is. CRU isn’t your average guided trail tour.  CRU is the dream setup for riders who want to get seriously off the beaten path – without having to sleep in a swag, fix their own flats or choke on exhaust fumes from some clapped-out rental fleet. It’s first-class riding, in one of the world’s most spectacular settings.

CRU operates out of a beachside base in Playa Hermosa, just 90 minutes from San Jose Airport. Think palm-lined beachfront, warm tropical water and five fully-kitted out houses known collectively as the CRU Compound. Riders roll straight out the front door and into dirtbike paradise.

The accommodation is a far cry from your usual bunkhouse. With ocean views, private porches and howler monkeys as your alarm clock, it’s the kind of place you could park yourself for a week. Ride as hard as you like– or sip an Imperial on the balcony and let the others go chase waterfalls.

CRU runs a tight ship with a fleet of 2024 and 2025-model enduro bikes, prepped and maintained by people who know what they’re doing.

Expect to throw a leg over:

  • 2025 Husqvarna FE 350
  • 2025 Husqvarna TE 300
  • 2025 GasGas EC 350
  • 2024 GasGas EC 350
  • 2024 KTM EXC 300

And here’s the good bit. Unlimited singletrack. CRU doesn’t just sprinkle in a bit of dirt between fire roads and paved transfers. You’ll tackle tight jungle singletrack, charge mountain ridgelines, splash through river crossings and race the tide across the sands of the Pacific. Every day is a new loop. And the US-based guides make sure the pace is right for the group – fast enough to test you, with just enough breathing room to soak up the surroundings.

When you’re not railing ruts or jumping logs, you’re swimming under waterfalls, grabbing tacos in Jaco, hitting the casino or just soaking up the sunset from your verandah. The CRU base is just 15 minutes from Jaco, one of Costa Rica’s most lively beach towns. There’s nightlife, restaurants, bars and surf – if your legs still work by the time the ride’s over.
