Get ready for an epic weekend of surf and dirt! MXstore has announced the inaugural Foam and Loam event, a two-day surf and moto team contest happening February 22–23, 2025. Teams will compete at Newcastle’s Bar Beach on Saturday and then head to Maitland District MCC on Sunday for a unique mix of action and endurance.
The event is led by legendary surfer and dirt bike enthusiast Julian Wilson, who brings his passions for both sports to his backyard. Ranked #2 in the World Surf League in 2018 and an Olympian in 2020, Julian is no stranger to competition. When he’s not surfing, he’s ripping trails on his KTM or teaming up with mates for MXstore’s events. “Foam and Loam is the ultimate challenge and a great excuse to have an epic time together,” Julian shared.
What to Expect
Foam and Loam is a four-person team event combining surf and moto skills. Each rider must surf one wave and complete one lap per round, with results from both disciplines determining the overall winners. Julian teased that the pros might struggle outside their comfort zones: “You’ll have pro surfers excelling at the beach but struggling on the track, and vice versa. But the weekend legends who are solid at both? They’ll rule the weekend.”
– Day 1: Surf heats at Newcastle’s Bar Beach (Saturday, Feb 22)
– Day 2: Moto relay races at Maitland District MCC (Sunday, Feb 23)
Event Highlights
– Surf Format: Tag-team heats (30 minutes each), with riders surfing up to two waves per round. The best wave scores count, and one team member is the designated “Power Surfer,” earning double points for their top wave.
– Moto Format: Two 1.5-hour relay races on a custom track blending motocross and enduro. Teams must complete as many laps as possible, with each rider completing at least two laps across the event.
Who Can Compete?
The event is limited to 40 teams of four riders, with participants aged 16 and older. Classes include:
– Next Gen (all riders under 25)
– Open (general entry)
– Vets (all riders over 35)
– Mixed (at least one female rider)
– Women (all female riders)
*Note: A minimum of three teams is required per division.*

– 6:00–7:00 am: Welcome & sign-on
– 7:30 am–4:00 pm: Beach heats (2 rounds)
– 4:00 pm: Early sign-on & camping at Maitland District MCC
– Sunday, Feb 23 – Maitland District MCC
– 6:00–7:30 am: Sign-on at the track
– 7:30–8:00 am: Rider briefing
– 8:00 am–12:00 pm: Practice & moto relay races
– 12:30 pm: Trophy presentations
– 1:00–3:00 pm: Free ride practice sessions
