This past month has been a big one for time on the Sherco 300 SE Racing, especially with the opportunity to race it in the 8-Hour Transmoto event in Young. The bike continues to impress with its performance, handling, and adaptability in varying conditions.
I entered the bike in the Transmoto 8-Hour and prepped it with a brand-new Dunlop soft terrain sand tire. The hook-up was unreal – particularly on the grass track sections, which were in incredible shape after 30–40mm of rain earlier in the week and more rain the night before. The result? Perfect loamy conditions, no dust, and just the right amount of moisture.
There was no hard enduro in this round, so everything was flowing. I stayed mostly in second gear at the slowest point, and on the grass track we were stretching out to fourth gear wide open. The Sherco showed off some serious speed and stability at pace – it really came alive in those fast sections and handled it all with confidence.
After the race, we changed the jetting to Mitch’s recommended specs (sourced via Sherco and will let you know next issue), dropping the needle clip. While there wasn’t much of a bog initially, this change made a big difference. The bike gained more snap off the bottom and had a cleaner, crisper throttle response from just off idle through to the mid-range. It gave the power delivery a much more usable and responsive feel, especially in technical terrain.
We also played around more with the map switch – switching between aggressive and standard modes. It was really useful during the race, particularly when going from the fast grass track sections into the tighter, slippery tree-lined trails. The aggressive map gave the bike a sharp edge when needed, while the standard mode offered more control and traction when things got slick. Being able to change on the fly was a major advantage.
I also got a few more hours in at Redhill post-race and continue to grow more comfortable on the bike. The suspension has been spot on. While the KYB forks aren’t the top-tier factory versions, they’ve handled everything I’ve thrown at them without complaint. The setup strikes a great balance between plushness and performance, and I haven’t felt the need to make any major adjustments so far. Wes Mills
