The Suzuki DR-Z4S has hit 3277kms this month whilst sporting its new forged DR-Z4S gear shifter from Motorcycle Specialties, which fits like a glove. It’s been a busy month of road riding due to work bringing me all over Sydney, which, of course, for most, comes with the dreaded peak-hour traffic. Not dreaded for me though, as I have been having a ball commuting on this bike. The nice, high riding position allows me to effortlessly filter through traffic, and that couch of a seat has never given me a sore bum in the several-hour commutes each day.
I removed the EVAP canister from the DR-Z this month to remove some weight, but also gain a perfect spot for some extra fuel or a toolkit. I was expecting it to be quite an involved removal, but it was actually quite an easy mod. I did decide to give myself a challenge when I first got this bike to test, and it was to try and only use the Suzuki-supplied tools to fix the bike. I was able to remove the seat and all the plastics with just the 8 and 10mm tube spanner provided near the airbox, and it was a breeze!
I have been playing around in all the modes that the DRZ4S offers, which consist of three power modes—A, B and C—as well as gravel mode for a more limited-slip map for unsealed roads. For a new beginner rider, I can see the purpose of gravel mode if you aren’t confident in how the bike will react when it breaks traction, but as a more experienced rider, I found it more of a hindrance than help. As far as the main three power modes A, B and C… Power modes B and C lasted about 30 seconds before going straight to A. Traction control mode has also been off for 95% of the time, except for heavy rain. Annoyingly though, for over 3000kms, the bright orange traction control light has been staring at me day and night.
It would be great to be able to turn that light off, or even have an off-road mode that turns traction control and both front and rear ABS off with a single button, and does so with a small screen alert instead of a light.
