Decking out your child in riding gear can be a daunting task. Yeah, it has to look the part but you want to know that what you are paying for is truly up to the task. Your little rider needs to be protected but they also need to be comfortable. It’s hard enough grasping the fundamentals of riding so you don’t want to make it harder by dressing them in riding gear that is uncomfortable or restrictive. You also want to know the gear is going to last. At least until their next growth spurt, anyway. William has been riding in this Alpinestars kids gear for almost 12 months and despite a few spills and tip-overs, it is still in excellent condition, it still fits and best of all, he loves it.

ALPINESTARS SM5 HELMET

I chose the Alpinestars SM5 helmet for William because I trust the brand. The helmet is lightweight and it looks great. William is seven years old and still struggles with the buckling system so I always end up doing it for him, which is okay by me as it gives me peace of mind that it is done correctly. William wears size XS.

William says, “I like the good colours and it feels really strong to keep me safe. It’s easy to put on but Dad has to buckle the strap for me. It’s comfortable and really soft inside and it keeps my head warm. I like the feeling of it. It kind of hurst my ears when I take it off but I don’t mind because Dad says I need to hold the straps when I do it but I just rip it off.”

ALPINESTARS RACER JERSEY AND PANTS

I have to admit I did not hold much hope of pneuma blue/mars/red/white colour combination looking good for long, particularly on a seven year-old riding in dirt. To my surprise this gear washes well and it still looks great. It has worn extremely well with no signs of wear or tear. The pants have plenty of adjustment in the waist giving him room to grow. William wears size Youth M jersey and size Youth 24 pants.

William’s reports, “I like the feel of my jersey. The material is soft and the head part is small so it keeps snug around my neck. It’s long enough to stay tucked into my pants which is good because Dad says I need to keep it tucked in incase I crash and it can protect my back. I love the look of the jersey and it matches my pants. My pants are tough and not as soft as my jersey. It has knee panels that don’t wear out. The zip is easy to do but the buckle is a bit hard for me to do, but I can still do it up and undo it.”

ALPINESTARS TECH 3S YOUTH BOOT

William began riding in another brand of boot which he struggled with. He felt restricted and he hated wearing them. We forked out for these Tech 3S boots and he loves them. I like that his feet and ankles are secure and protected and that William can operate the buckles easily so he can put them on and take them off on his own. What I love most is the boots come an extra inner sole of a different size. This means you effectively get two sizes of boots in one. This is great value for money when you consider how fast little kids can grow.

William says, “I like how my boots feel. I can easily buckle them up and take them off. The Velcro at the top can be hard sometimes if I don’t stick it down in the right place. The boots look good and they get the dirtiest out of all the riding gear that I wear.”
