Factory Honda Australia unveils its 2024 SX1 Australian Supercross Championship line-up with Dean Wilson leading the charge.
Following their dominant performance in 2023, where Honda Australia secured victories in the SX1, SX2, and SX3 classes, the team is gearing up for 2024 with a blend of new talent and returning riders, aiming to defend their titles in the Australian Supercross Championship, headlined by Dean Wilson.
Leading the charge in the 450cc SX1 class is reigning Australian Supercross Champion, Dean Wilson. A world-renowned American rider with a history of international success, Wilson is determined to secure back-to-back championships and has been putting in the hard work to make it happen.
“I haven’t stopped,” said Wilson. “I’ve been racing AMA Supercross, competing in several rounds of Motocross, and participating in the SuperMotocross World Championship. My goal is to go back-to-back in Australia, and I’ve worked hard to stay competitive.”
Joining Wilson is Joey Savatgy, a new addition to the team. Savatgy is one of America’s most accomplished riders, with multiple wins and podiums in the 250 class and a strong best 8th overall finish in the AMA Supercross 450 class. A familiar face in Australia, Savatgy boasts four Australian Junior Championship titles and is eager to add the ultimate prize to his résumé: the Australian 450cc SX1 Championship.
“I’ve always enjoyed racing in Australia,” said Savatgy. “The fans are incredible and passionate about the sport, and the competition is intense. With teammates like Tanti and Wilson, I know the standard will be high, but I’m excited for the challenge. The Australian championship has grown so much, and there’s talent across all the teams. Seeing riders like Anstie and Brayton succeed back home after racing in Australia only adds to my motivation.
The final SX1 team spot is filled by Australian Champion Aaron Tanti, riding for Boost Mobile Honda. Hungry for redemption after narrowly missing out in previous years, Tanti is focused on winning the overall championship.
“The Supercross Championship has slipped through my fingers a few times due to mistakes,” Tanti admitted. “But I feel great about where I’m at now and really confident in the bike – it’s a winning package.”
Team Manager Mark Sladek is confident in the team’s strength and believes this year’s lineup is one of the most competitive Honda Racing has ever assembled.
“This is one of the strongest 450 programs we’ve entered in the history of Honda Racing,” said Sladek. “The championship continues to grow with bigger crowds and TV exposure, and we’re proud to be part of it. All three riders have the ability to win, and we’re excited for what lies ahead. Managing that level of talent will be key.”
