The Tatts Finke Desert Race is set for the global spotlight, with Wild State – the media company founded by Australian actor Chris Hemsworth and producer Ben Grayson – entering an exclusive partnership with the iconic Finke event to develop a feature film inspired by the legendary desert race. The partnership will see the Tatts Finke Desert Race, its competitors, communities and unique outback setting showcased to audiences worldwide through a project inspired by one of Australia’s most demanding and iconic events.

Held annually between Alice Springs and Aputula (Finke), the Tatts Finke Desert Race has grown from humble beginnings in 1976 into an internationally recognised off-road event that attracts competitors and spectators from across Australia and overseas. The project represents another milestone in the race’s 50-year history, highlighting not only the spectacle of the event itself but also the people, communities and landscapes that make Central Australia unique.

Tatts Finke Desert Race Vice-President Kelsey Branford said the partnership was a “significant moment” for the event and the region:
“It is an incredible opportunity to share the story of the Tatts Finke Desert Race with audiences around the world. Finke is more than just a race – it’s a community, a tradition and an experience that means so much to Alice Springs, Aputula and everyone who has been part of the journey over the last 50 years.
“To have a globally recognised production company see the value in telling this story is a proud moment for our volunteers, competitors, supporters and the wider community.”

Minister for Tourism and Hospitality and Major Events Marie-Clare Boothby added the announcement showed the Territory’s growing reputation as a destination for major events and screen production.

“The Tatts Finke Desert Race is one of the most iconic off-road races in the world and it is a defining Territory event.

“This partnership will take that story to a global audience. It will showcase our landscapes, our people and the Territory spirit like nowhere else. By bringing everything together, we are creating real opportunities to promote the Territory and attract investment.

“This is about turning interest into investment and making sure the Territory is front and centre on the global stage.”

The 50th Tatts Finke Desert Race will run from Friday 5 June to Monday 8 June 2026 from Alice Springs to Aputula (Finke) and back.
