Our tech Ed Mat Boyd checks in with us to tell us how the GYTR Akrapovic Titanium Exhaust system is going on his Yamaha YZ450F.
The GYTR Akrapovic Titanium Exhaust system is sold by Yamaha as a racing part designed to increase the horsepower and torque right through the entire rev range of the YZ450F. It is manufactured by Akrapovic for the Yamaha Racing Teams and is used by race teams all over the world. It complies with both AMA and FIM noise standards and is 0.9kg lighter than the stock pipe. We ran the GYTR Akrapovic exhaust system on our long term YZ450F for months and here’s what we thought of it.
WE LIKED
FITMENT
The standard Yamaha exhaust system is a nightmare to remove but the Akrapovic pipe fits much easier and neatly and is capable of being removed and refitted later on in minutes.
NOISE
While the pipe did raise the noise levels a little it produces a much nicer note. It’s snappier and the note sounds much meatier and aggressive.
POWER
The exhaust system lifted an already powerful engine and gave it much sharper throttle response. As the engine is already so powerful it takes a good rider to actually use it all and be able to tell but any rider should notice just how much more snappy and responsive the YZ becomes with the Akrapovic exhaust.
TOUGHNESS
Titanium exhaust systems aren’t normally known for being strong and durable. The Akrapovic on the other hand is made from high grade titanium that is so strong it may as well be stainless steel.
WE DIDN’T LIKE
GUARDS
When you fit the pipe to the bike you need to remove and reuse the old exhaust guard from the original header pipe. Removing these guards can get difficult when the bolts become rusty or seized so this can be a tricky job. For the price of the pipe I would like to see it come with its own carbon fiber guard printed with Akrapovic.
CONCLUSION
If you’re crazy enough to actually be looking for more power out of your YZ450F then I am happy to say the GYTR Akrapovic exhaust system will supply you with that. In fact after fitting the pipe to our long term test bike we remapped the bike to smoothen out the bottom end power to make it more controllable and easier to keep traction. If you are after a titanium pipe that is tough and performs then the Akrapovic is for you. Unfortunately the silencer looks a little no frills without any colour or anything to stand out and the price is a little expensive but make no mistake, this thing is the Rolls Royce of exhaust systems.
