WE RECEIVED a bunch of Pirelli Tyres and Vee Rubber Tubes early on this year and we have been running them on our YZ450F long-term testbike. The YZ has loads of tyre-ripping grunt so the Pirelli Scorpions were up for a challenge. We had mid/softs and mid/hards to test out and we always fitted them up with Vee Rubber Ultra Heavy Duty tubes inside. We have given these tyres a good run in everything from super hardpack to sand and loam, and we have been impressed with the performance.

WE LIKED

EASY TO FIT The Pirelli Scorpion tyres have a soft sidewall which makes them incredibly easy to fit whether you are using a tyre machine or tyre levers in your garage.

NO PUNCTURES We have run the Pirelli Scorpion tyres with the Vee Rubber Ultra Heavy Duty tubes all year. We have run them as high as 16psi and as low as 11psi and have never gotten a single puncture all year.

FRONT-END GRIP I have found the traction on the MX32 mid/soft to be very good. It’s a tyre that inspires loads of confidence. I have been able to push it in the sand and on hardpack tracks and it has held up really well.

DURABILITY I have actually started pairing the MX32 mid/hard rear tyre with the mid/soft front tyre on hardpack tracks as I find the mid/hard tyre to drive just as well but I get more life out of it, whereas the soft tyre on hardpack/rocky tracks tends to get ripped up a little.

WE DIDN’T LIKE

MID/HARD FRONT I wouldn’t go as far as saying I didn’t like the mid/hard front tyre because I do run it on my practice wheels as it’s a longer lasting tyre, but I do prefer the grip and performance of the mid/soft tyre so that is the tyre I choose to race on.

TUBE FITMENT The Ultra Heavy Duty Tubes are quite hard and rigid which means it takes a little more effort to force them inside the tyres, but that’s a price I am more than willing to pay to never get a flat tyre.

 VERDICT

I have had a great time riding on the Pirelli Scorpion MX32 tyres with the Vee Rubber Ultra Heavy Duty Tubes. I haven’t had a flat tyre all year and I have won a bunch of races. I have built up a tremendous amount of confidence in the MX32 mid/soft front tyre which I like to pair with the mid/hard rear tyre. I would suggest to anyone riding in loam or sand to try out the mid/soft tyres but if you are riding somewhere hardpack with plenty of hidden rocks then I would suggest giving the MX32 mid/hard tyres a go as they are longer-wearing.

The Vee Rubber Ultra Heavy Duty Tubes have been excellent. They are a little harder to fit but it’s the price you pay for reliability. Apart from losing the odd knob, I have had no issues with the Pirelli Scorpion tyres or the Vee Rubber Tubes.
