Battery chainsaws used to be the thing you grabbed for trimming branches around the backyard. Not anymore. Milwaukee’s new M18 FUEL 20” Dual Battery Chainsaw is aimed squarely at serious users, packing what Milwaukee claims is the equivalent of 70cc petrol power into a cordless setup that ditches pull-starts, fumes and all the usual petrol headaches.

Built around Milwaukee’s POWERSTATE Brushless Motor, the saw delivers up to 4.3kW of peak power and 9.5Nm of torque, giving it enough grunt for felling, limbing, bucking and heavy-duty cutting work. There are also two selectable power modes—Standard Mode for longer runtime and cooler operation, or Peak Power Mode when you want maximum cut performance and reduced bogging under load. Basically: eco mode or beast mode.

The feature list is stacked too. You get dual metal bucking spikes for stability, high-visibility felling sight lines, an inertia chain brake for kickback protection, automatic chain oiling, onboard scrench storage, and a balanced design aimed at reducing fatigue. Running on Milwaukee’s M18 platform, it’s compatible with the brand’s huge ecosystem of cordless gear—though this saw does require two batteries to operate and is designed around the new M18 REDLITHIUM FORGE 8.0Ah batteries.

At 6.9kg, it’s not exactly a featherweight, but compared to lugging around fuel cans and dealing with a grumpy cold-start two-stroke at 6am, it’s a very different experience. And yes, it’s probably quieter than your mate’s straight-piped chainsaw too.
