JUNE TRICKS OF THE TRADE | Tricks of the Trade

ADB Tech Ed Mat Boyd tells us the tricks of the trade he is using in the month of June. Add some of these to your workshop processes.

FREE TRICK: BRAKE PADS

TROUBLE:

Fitting a rear wheel can be difficult, especially when you trying to thread the chain onto the sprocket and slip the disc between the brake pads at the same time.

TRICK:

Take a large flat blade screw driver and push the brake pads back to give you more room to slip the disc in.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 1 minute

COST: $0

TOOLS: Flat blade screw driver

FREE TRICK: TIGHT FORKS

TROUBLE:

If the triple clamps have been over tightened then the forks can bind up in the tripe clamps making them difficult to remove.

TRICK:

Remove the triple clamp bolts and lightly tap two flat blade screw drivers into the triple clamps to open up the clamps and make the forks slide out easier.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 2 minutes

COST: $0

TOOLS: Flat blade screw driver

CHEAP TRICK: CLEAN GRIPS

TROUBLE:

When your bike lives in your workshop like mine you are constantly touching the grips and moving the bike around which causes the grease of my hands to stain and dirty the grips.

TRICK:

Fit a set of grip wraps to the grips so that the grips will always be clean when it’s time to go riding.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 1 minute

COST: $20

TOOLS: Grip wraps

FREE TRICK: TIGHT CHAIN

TROUBLE:

When you are refitting the rear wheel you need to try and hold the wheel forward while tightening the axle so that the chain adjusters are set right.

TRICK:

Take a spanner or even a rag and place it on the sprocket, then roll the wheel back so the spanner or rag gets jammed between the sprocket and chain. This will tighten the chain and pull the wheel forward against the chain adjusters while you tighten the axle.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 1 minute

COST: $0

TOOLS: Spanner or rag
