PRODUCT TEST | OXFORD DOCKING STATION & HD CHAIN | Product Evaluations

A year ago we picked up this Oxford Docking Station & HD chain, there's how it's going at keeping our bike safe!

There’s no better way to keep your bike safe than bolting it to the ground. You can try a guard dog or security camera but a simple Schmacko and a can of black spray paint will overcome those security features. Oh and an alarmed lock, which we also run, is good but the anxiety of going away and thinking your bike might randomly fall over setting off the alarm is not worth it. The Oxford Docking Station & HD Chain (two metre Oxford Heavy Duty chain) might seem archaic but it’s the best way to lock multiple bikes up at once.

WE LIKED

TOUGH The Oxford HD chain (which also comes with a mid-range lock) is a hardened 9.5mm square link chain which is heavy and tough. I can’t crack it, not even with a sledge hammer or grinder.

EASE-OF-USE To get the chain through the docking station you simply attach one end through the rod, weave the other end of the chain through the bikes and push through the rod through the last link in the chain. Turn the key and presto, your chain ain’t going anywhere.

SAFE There’s no easy way to get an angle grinder into the docking station and the dyna-bolts are banged in with a ball bearing to prevent someone from getting them out.

DOUBLE OR NOTHING The benefit of a chain over a disc lock is you chain multiple bikes up at once. We have three bikes chained up.

WE DIDN’T LIKE

DOCKING STATION LOCK For some reason the docking station lock where the key goes in was a bit fiddly. You kind of had to be paying attention to get the lock to turn.

BOLTING IT DOWN Dyna-bolting the Docking Station to the concrete floor was a challenge as I’m not a tradie so my crappy masonry bits and poor-man’s drill got a workout.

VERDICT

The Oxford Docking Station and the two metre Oxford Heavy Duty chain are incredibly durable and tough. They’re showing no signs of rust or wear and I open and close the pin lock every day. I can’t cut through it with anything in my garage and unless a thief wants to jackhammer the concrete out, they’re not getting my bike.
