TRICKS OF THE TRADE – FORK SEAL CLEANER | Tricks of the Trade

ADB's Tech Ed Mat Boyd drops in to share the tech tricks of the trade he's used this month starting with a fork seal cleaner.

CHEAP TRICK – FORK SEAL CLEANER

Trouble:

When out trail riding your fork seals can become exposed to all sorts of mud and sand that can get caught up in the seals and cause them to start leaking.

TRICK:

Get a fork seal cleaner and clip it to your upper fork leg. This way it is right there whenever you get a leaking fork seal and you can clean the seal out right away.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 1 minute

COST: $30

TOOLS: Fork Seal Cleaner

CHEAP TRICK – HOW MANY HOURS

TROUBLE:

We all know that we should keep track of the service intervals on our bikes but remembering exactly when you did the last oil change can be difficult and can leave room for forgetfulness.

TRICK:

Right the hours on the hour meter on your frame in permanent marker when you last changed the oil in your engine. Then when it’s time to do it again you can wipe it off with some carby cleaner and write down the new hours.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 2 minutes

COST: $5

TOOLS: Permanent marker, carby cleaner

CHEAP TRICK – OIL SPILL

TROUBLE:

The two stroke oil injected KTM, Husqvarna and GASGAS enduro bikes are oil injected and have an oil tank located in the front of the frame. When filling this oil tank there can often be spills.

TRICK:

Take a grip donut and place it around the outside of the filling cap. It will catch and soak up small spills but it also looks pretty cool.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 1 minute

COST: $8

TOOLS: Grip donuts

CHEAP TRICK – CLAMP IT

TROUBLE:

The carbureted two stroke KTM, Husqvarna and GASGAS enduro and motocross bikes come with no clamps on the fuel tap side of the fuel line. While the fuel line pushes on tight I have seen them knocked loose on to many occasions.

  TRICK:

Use a spring style hose clamp on the fuel hose to hold it in place. This will stop the fuel line from popping off if it ever gets tugged on.

DIFFICULTY: 1

TIME: 1 minute

COST: $2

TOOLS: Fuel line clamp
